Mantra Meditation

"Mantra” is a Sanskrit word that has no synonym in any other language. Mantra is a particular word or words whose repetition assists an individual to free the mind from its focus on the physical, mental and emotional aspects of our existence. To be effective the mantra must have mundane significance (meaning), acoustical significance (the effect of sound on the mind, body and emotions) and an incantative rhythm.

Each sound of a mantra resonates subtle energy centers and glands of the body. The glands in turn have a profound but subtle effect on our physical, mental and emotional state. Because the acoustical sound of the mantra stimulates the subtle energy centers of the body, it is more effective than incantation of the mantra's translation in English or another language.

Mantra meditation is an important and useful tool to quiet the body, mind and emotions and allow one to enter a deep and quiet place. Once the divisive tendencies of the body, mind and emotions are brought into harmony, clarity and renewed strength are available to meet and overcome each life challenge as it presents itself. Mantra meditation will not eliminate our life challenges but can enable us to harmonize our body, mind, emotions and spirit and to focus our energy like a powerful beam of light on the challenges that lie ahead. The Sanskrit word for meditation is sadhana, and the translation of sadhana is effort.

A General Mantra "Baba Nam Kevalam"

The general mantra "Baba Nam Kevalam" is used in chants and personal meditation previous to learning a personal mantra from a teacher in an individual session. The simple translation is “LOVE IS ALL.”

"Baba" literally translated means beloved. “Nam” means name of, and "Kevalam" means only. Just the thought of the Beloved will bring us to the experience of that supreme love, or more simply put, Love is all. This is a general mantra and may be used for meditation, singing, or for repetition during daily activities.

A Simple Technique

Sit comfortably on the floor with legs crossed or in a straight chair with the spine erect. (If sitting in a chair cross your legs at the ankles but not above). Hands should be placed right over left in your lap. Close your eyes and take three deep relaxing breaths. Listen to your breathing. Then allow your breathing to find its own rhythm. Now shift your focus to the mantra. Repeat the mantra over and over in a rhythmic way. If the mind wanders, gently bring it back to the mantra and continue the repetition. Thoughts will come in and out during the process, but simply focus on the mantra and its meaning rather than the. Keep repeating the mantra. When you finish meditation give yourself some transition time before resuming your daily activities.
